Natural Hair Products

As a Natural Hair Enthusiast I always look at the ingredients of the hair products I buy; then if at all possible I do the sniff test. I like products that smell good enough to eat; two of my favorite scents are Coconut & Lavender.

A lot of products claim to be Organic; as well as, nourishing and healthy for natural hair. Then if it’s not full of junk and a whole bunch of things I can’t pronounce, I may actually buy it.

Here is my review: The product with the worst ingredients is “Organic Root Olive Oil” not so organic… Here are the Pros: smells good, holds the curls, but it DRIES OUT THE HAIR… I’ve learned that the more ingredients within a product the less organic the product. I counted nearly 35-40 different ingredients, and one of the main ingredients in this product is Mineral Oil. Mineral not only clogs the pores it suffocates the skin! It also has Benzyl Benzoate in it, which is an ester of benzyl alcohol and acid; additionally, it’s primarily used as a lice or scabies treatment. Need I say more?

A lot of people rave about Kinky-Curly, and it’s not a cheap product. I tried the Knot-Today leave-in detangler, and this product truly didn’t assist much in detangling my hair. Although, it does have about 9 ingredients in it that are organic.

I also tried the Kinky-Curly Curling Custard; this is also not a cheap product, and the ingredients are all good. Oh, and I love the smell of it, but I wasn’t crazy about it. And I followed the directions; I made sure my thick coarse curls were “dripping wet” when I applied the slop to my hair. The texture of this custard is slimy and I should add that I have tightly coiled curls and whenever my hair is wet it looks like a perfect spiral. Therefore I wasn’t looking for something to curl my hair, I was looking for a product that would help accentuate and hold the curls when my hair isn’t wet. When I used the custard I was doing a twist-out style and was hoping this would help with shine or something, yet this did nothing at all for shine.

Lastly, the Curl Crème Brule, this has to be one of my favorite smells, coconut. The first few ingredients include: Water, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Glycerin, Helianthus, and Sunflower Oil etc. I actually like this product, the texture is smooth and creamy and it softens my hair, but as far as shine goes it’s not long lived with this or any of the products that I’ve mentioned.

Overall, most of the products help with frizz, but after a day or so my curls start to frizz back up. The worst product is the “Organic Root Olive Oil” as it really dries the hair out. Therefore, I find myself constantly applying more oils to my hair to regain its shine. I don’t like to add many products to my hair as I feel that this weighs it down and attracts more dirt to it.

Hope this info assists you on your next hair-shopping venture. Please keep in mind everyone’s hair is different and respond to products differently, so what worked for my hair, may not work for yours and vice versa. Feel free to comment or ask me questions.

  1. Be easy… Thanks for your comment.

  2. I did try one of the product mention above and I agree with you it didn’t assist in detangling my hair. Still looking for products that can keep my hair a shine and keep my curls.
